 This
journal entry was written September 24. This week was the
students' first full week of running and walking in Washington state!
One view that was constant every day was that of the Columbia River,
which runs along Highway 14 mile after mile after mile. Across the
Columbia River the students could see Oregon. The river is a
natural border between Washington and Oregon. The weather cooperated
this week and the students took advantage of the nice temperatures.
This
week the students experienced the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic
Area. Some of Washington's small towns that they passed through this
week include: Fisher, Camas, Washougal, Skamania, North Bonneville,
Stevenson, Homes Valley, Cook, Underwood, Bingen, and Lyle. They ran
and walked through Beacon Rock State Park, Doug's Beach State Park,
and Horsethief Lake State Park - passing directly through the Cascade
Mountain Range. They ended the week viewing the Dalles Dam. Their view
of this large dam was wonderful because Highway 14 nearly touches the
Columbia River where the Dalles Dam is located.
The
students are currently approaching
Wishram, Washington - population
324. Most towns along Highway 14 are as small (if not smaller than) Wishram. This small town is shown in the picture above.
