The 4th grade class entered Minnesota this week!
Congratulations 4th graders!! Both classes are now
in Minnesota and put in a very impressive week of
distance. The unseasonably warm weather is
certainly welcomed for this virtual trek.
The
4th grade class is 141½ miles behind the 5th grade
class. However, what is most important is that
they are ahead of pace! We truly don't want to
focus on the mileage difference between the two
classes. The goal is for each class to stay on or
ahead of pace. That is currently what they are
doing, and that's terrific! This week the 4th
grade class completed the first half of this
3,200-mile trek by surpassing the 1,600-mile mark!
The
5th grade class encountered their largest city yet
in Minnesota when they ran/walked through Mankato,
which has a population of approximately 35,000.
The 4th grade class is very close to the town of
Marshall, Minnesota (population around 14,000).
The route takes both classes south of the large
cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The largest
city they will encounter in Minnesota will be
Rochester, which has a population of approximately
98,000 people.
Mr.
and Mrs. Staso and their children were still in
California this week and the substitute teachers
did an excellent job of keeping the students
active in P.E. and recording individual distances.
Also, the 4th and 5th grade teachers have been
truly supportive of the Run/Walk Across America
curriculum and have taken the students out several
times (outside of P.E. time) to run/walk in a park
nearby the school. That has certainly contributed
toward the classes getting on - and ahead - of
pace! Thanks teachers!!

Some Encouraging Notes
We Received This Week: |

Wow! I just recently
found out about your project to cover America on foot during this
school year. What an impressive goal! I am so happy that you are
learning what a fun, exciting and healthy thing exercise can be. It
looks like you are right on your target pace which is excellent! I
am a runner and while I am not very fast and will never win a race I
feel great because I am doing something healthy for myself. When I
don't run I tend to be in a bad mood! My kids know if I didn't get a
chance to run and they will ride with me on their bikes so that I am
able to get my exercise in!
Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration and I hope you
will continue your physical activity long past this year! I will
keep checking back on your progress because I can't wait to see you
reach your final goal. You won't believe what an incredible feeling
it is!

Kids,
I am hoping that you are getting these e-mails in Mrs. Staso's
absence. I hope you are keeping at doing your mileage. Remember that
the pace required to finish keeps advancing whether the Stasos are
checking on you or not. Keep moving forward!

Dear
Everyone! I am so amazed at your perseverance and dedication while I
have been in California with my mom. By "doing the work", it will be
much easier for me to return and pick-up where I left off! You
have encouraged me through this difficult time by being steadfast
and continuing on your journey... which you have made your own!
I'm looking forward to being back with you and I hear we have some
'partying' to do! You each are awesome and I miss you!
Mrs. Vicki Staso The
Participating Students' P.E. Teacher
Missoula, Montana (but currently in San
Luis Obispo, California)
Note: Many of you are aware that the students' P.E. teacher,
Mrs. Staso, had to leave Missoula, Montana on January 6th to be at
her mother's side in California. Her mother has battled cancer for 3
years and Mrs. Staso went to be with her during her final days/weeks.
Sadly, Mrs. Staso's mother passed away on January 18, 2006.

What
a great project. I hope all of the kids in the 4th and 5th grade
classes appreciate the effort your teachers have made to involve you
in a project like run across America. good luck!
