.
This journal entry was written December 10. This was such an encouraging week! We received more notes of encouragement this week than any other week since this virtual trek began! THANK YOU to each and every web site visitor, parent, teacher, coach, student, and others who took time this week to send a note of encouragement to the students. You have truly helped to motivate them and we hope that more people will continue to encourage the students - particularly through the next 6 weeks, which are so crucial in the their success. You see, the combination of the holidays (away from school) and the cold weather and snow makes the running/walking challenge even greater for the kids. So, we'll keep asking... please take 1 minute to encourage the kids. We're sure you'll feel great for doing it!

Be sure to scroll down to read all 70 of the wonderful notes of encouragement that we received this week!

This week Mrs. Vicki Staso was interviewed on a local radio station in Missoula about our virtual trek and it was aired during local news segments on KGVO (1290 AM) and KYSS-FM (94.9 FM) with Craig and Al. Thank you to Peter Christian for interviewing Vicki!

The students have about 220 miles left before completing the state of Montana - the largest state for them to cross in their 15-state trek across America. Montana is 618 miles across on this route! The Russell Elementary PTA has put a challenge to the 4th and 5th grade students. If they can complete the state of Montana by the time they leave school for Christmas break (December 22), the PTA will give them a pizza party. So, the classes have two weeks to conquer 220 miles. That means that they'll have to run/walk 110 miles each week for the next two weeks. That is possible. Each class has already logged weeks in excess of 110 miles, although that was prior to the snow and cold temperatures arriving in Montana! We're cheering them on! So can you!!

Currently, the 5th grade is nearing Roundup, Montana, and the 4th grade is past Roundup - approaching Melstone. As you can see from the weather conditions noted above, this week Missoula experienced a low temperature of 16 degrees below zero, and a high temperature around 5 degrees. Certainly the cold weather, snowy conditions, and icy roads are all factors in the amount of running/walking the students accomplish each week. They are doing great and we're extremely proud of them all!

Some Encouraging Notes We Received This Week:

Hi Kids, I guess last week might be called a "bump in the road." You can't let it discourage you. I'd like to challenge you, so here's my suggestion: Can each of you fourth graders do at least 2.5 miles this week (and those of you who can do more, please do)? And can you fifth graders each do at least 3 miles this week? If you guys can do this, you'll make big progress to being back on track. Here in New Jersey, we just got our first real snow. I like to cross-country ski when we get some real accumulations. Do any of you do that? I hope I can meet Mr. Staso in Delaware, but it's up to you guys to make it happen. Apply yourselves every day and it will happen. Best wishes and stay warm (by running)!

Wayne Baker
Westfield, New Jersey

Mr. and Mrs. Staso have told me what you students are doing, and I am thrilled to hear it. Keep up the good work! Add up those miles! Make my friend, Paul, run across America for real. I know he wants to do it. You will be accomplishing something no one else has done! And, I will help support Paul financially, when he runs it this summer.

David Rodli
Missoula, Montana

Hey guys....This is a really good way to combine physical fitness with a goal. Some of you might not be good runners now but you never know, as you grow and develop, you may become a track star. Maybe not, but this program will certainly keep the cobwebs out of that thing sitting on your shoulders.

  • dis·ci·pline - noun (plural dis·ci·plines)

    Definitions:

    1. training to ensure proper behavior: the practice or methods of teaching and enforcing acceptable patterns of behavior;

    2. order and control: a controlled orderly state, especially in a class of schoolchildren;

    3. calm controlled behavior: the ability to behave in a controlled and calm way even in a difficult or stressful situation;

    4. conscious control over lifestyle: mental self-control used in directing or changing behavior, learning something, or training for something.

If you learn discipline at your age, it will serve you well as you grow into adulthood. Good running!!

Way to go kids! Keep up the good work, its hard to stay active in the winter time. I am hoping for a visit this summer from Mr. Staso, if you meet your goal he will be running through my hometown, Rochester, MN. Keep plugging along!

You guys are doing such a good job. Don't forget that if you can cross Montana before Christmas break, (December 22 is your last day of school) there's a pizza party waiting to happen. Be creative in how you achieve your miles. Get an adult to take you "mall walking", bundle up and walk outside, use a treadmill if you have one available, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER: Check with an adult DO NOT go by yourself, and be smart and be safe!!!

Diana Sontag
Missoula, Montana

I am so proud of all of you - what a great project! I know it's harder now that it's turned cold and snowy, but I have confidence you can make your goal. Keep up the good work and I'll be there to help you celebrate when you finish your journey across Montana!!

Hello Boys and Girls! I'm happy to see that you are going to run through the winter. I think cold/cool running weather is the best. Running keeps you toasty warm outdoors. I hope to hear about all of your adventures. Keep up the good work! My class runs too - all year.

I am encouraged by your willingness to run and walk day after day and week after week. It was 32 degrees in Fresno this morning when I got dressed to go outside for MY run, and I "chickened out." I didn't have time to go out after it warmed up, so I just missed out for today. After reading about YOUR dedication to the task, I am much more likely to go out, myself, even if it IS cold. Thank you for encouraging me, and I hope I am encouraging you, also.

Keep up the good work! I know you can complete this. Since it's so cold there, could you walk the halls instead of outside? We measured a path of 1 mile in our school hallways for teachers to walk after school one year and I bet you could do the same at your school. Don't give up!

I'm an elementary counselor and I see many children who would benefit from this kind of endeavor. Please keep up the good work, which can be a terrific example to lots of other kids. I'll be sharing your exciting progress with four schools' fourth and fifth graders. At one of my schools, there is a running club. They just competed in the Jingle Bell Run in downtown Peoria, which raises money for the Arthritis Foundation. They will begin again in the spring and run in a race that supports our Family House for families with children in the hospital. You have set the bar for many other such groups and given them an inspiring example to follow. I'm rooting for all of you!

You kids are doing something that few children have every thought about! Congratulations on making it to the middle of Montana! May you find strength to continue strong during the cold weather that lies ahead. You are setting a wonderful example for us adults!

I try to walk two miles every day, so I know that you can walk 2 miles each week. I, too, live where it is cold and snowy, so I walk inside. Did you know that if you march in place at a good pace for 15 minutes, you have walked the equivalent of a mile? Ask your teachers if doing this will count toward your mileage. You can put on five fun songs, march in place, and at the end of this, you will have gone about one mile. Here's something else fun to try--march in place during the commercials while you are watching TV. Keep track of the minutes. You will be shocked to learn just how many minutes of commercials there are! You could also walk two miles while watching a half hour sit-com. Good luck!

I am the Mapping / GIS Supervisor for Missoula County so I work with geography every day. Many years ago I drove this cross country route. It took four long days! I truly admire your courage and your determination to take on a task as large as this. Hang in there. Take it one day at a time and you will accomplish your goal! If you do, I'll print you a wall map of your route. Good luck!

Hey you guys... Keep it up!!!! You can do it!!!! My sister, Sharon Hanson, from Missoula, sent us an article that described your amazing, interesting & challenging endeavor. You are truly pioneers!!!!! Another approach: Encouragement!!! If you encourage each other (including the other class) you will be able to cross the finish line together holding your hands above your head when you cross the finish line!!!! Get the good feeling that comes with running and accomplishing something that no class has ever done before. Keep It Up!!!!! You Can Do It!!!!

I had a friend who had a muscle disease and could not run, or even walk. She used to watch people and wonder if they knew how wonderful it was to have a healthy body. I think you students know how wonderful it is to have a healthy body. Keep the pace! You can do this!

I am SO impressed with your quest to conquer the United States via your virtual run/walk. Keep adding up those miles. It makes me proud to see that progress line moving ahead. The entire state of Montana is cheering for you. We want to see a group of Montana kids accomplish something no other group has succeeded in doing. Go for it! We're all cheering for you. Go, Missoula, Montana! (Be sure to put on a few extra layers of clothing as the thermometer drops. I can tell you that -24 degrees requires many layers. My dog, Tucker, became restless waiting for me to don all of my running gear this morning. But what fun it was after we'd taken the first few steps!) I might also tell you that I've been running for 35 years. I'll admit that on mornings when it's dark and cold I have questioned going out for a run. However, I ALWAYS know I've made the right choice once I'm outside feeling my body moving. Nothing beats the feeling the rhythm of running creates. Happy Running and Happy Holidays

Congratulations from Napanee, Ontario, Canada! What a neat idea! We hope you enjoy every minute of this challenge, and that you reach your goal of walking/running across the USA by the end of June. The winter months are cold (We know!), but if you keep your target in mind, you will make it. We look forward to hearing that you reached your goal. In Canada, we have many heroes that show us how to set a goal and continue to reach towards it. Terry Fox and Vicky Keith are two of them. We are sure you have many heroes you can look up to in this way to encourage you to keep going even when the going gets tough. Try to imagine the feelings you will experience when it is June (warm!) and you have reached your goal. You're off to a good start, keep it up!

Remember: Running/walking is a good way to keep warm!

I am so impressed! This is an excellent endeavor by you all. What a sense of achievement you must already have. I'm an old childhood friend of Mrs. Staso and she's always been an impressive and wonderful person, but this program shows how much she cares for you all and how much confidence she has in all of you to accomplish this mighty task. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching your progress through the end of school. GREAT JOB ALL OF YOU!

Mrs. Heidi Lindner, a 5th Grade Teacher at Beaver Acres Elementary, located in Beaverton, Oregon, gave her students an opportunity to send the Russell Elementary 4th and 5th graders many words of encouragement. She also organized similar encouragement notes in October. Here are the kind thoughts that her students sent to us this week:

I know it is cold, but I wish you good luck. What if you were actually running across the USA? I was once one place when it was freezing. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
