Russell Elementary students
continue running across U.S. The North Dakota border is virtually in sight for Russell Elementary School's cross-country runners. Since September 15, physical education teacher Vicki Staso's students have been logging the cumulative laps they run in gym class on a map of the nation. All together, the fifth grade has notched 1,200 miles by Christmas break. That puts them near Baker, 15 miles from the eastern border of Montana. The fourth-graders are slightly behind, with 1,160 miles logged before vacation. Both classes are a bit off pace to reach the Atlantic coast by the end of the school year. The project was the brainchild of Vicki and her husband, Paul Staso, a Web site designer and long-distance runner. Paul has pledged that if the students complete their virtual run by the end of the school year, he will run the actual route for real this summer. Much of the students' trek follows the route of Lewis and Clark's Voyage of Discovery. Vicki Staso and other Russell teachers have used the route map to add a geographic dimension to history, math and other lessons at school. Some dedicated students promised to add some laps over Christmas break. "They've been doing stuff, but I won't have the numbers until I get back to school," Vicki Staso said.
