We've been doing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Montana since 1998 – the year Google launched. Back then the major search engines were Yahoo, Excite, HotBot, and Lycos. Today, Google, Bing and Yahoo are the leaders of the search engine market – with Google holding 65% of the market share, Yahoo 17%, and Bing 12%. Last month, 15.4 billion searches were carried out in the United States via search engines. Is your web site effectively leveraging the power of Internet search engines to attract new customers? If not, we can help.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? It is the process of deliberately enhancing a web site's content to gain higher rankings on (and therefore increased traffic from) search engines. Revolving around keywords and key phrases, the basic SEO principal is to make your site as relevant as possible to searchers who may be seeking your kind of products or services. This means altering the wording and coding of your web site to ensure an automated search engine spider will effectively index your site with the targeted keywords and key phrases. Ideally, SEO should begin in the planning stage of web site construction and continue throughout the life of the web site to evolve and improve the effectiveness of the site's content. However, many web site owners have had their sites developed by those who either knew nothing about SEO or did not properly implement SEO techniques and strategies. SEO can certainly begin, or be enhanced, after the web site is developed and launched to the Internet, but there may be some limitations to modifications based on the web site's framework. Remember, there are over 240 million web sites on the Internet, with 47 million new sites added just last year! Our quality SEO services help you compete online.

How can you use SEO to build your business? Recent research shows that the following number of searches are performed each month worldwide with the top three search engines:

SEARCHES: Google – 88 billion per month Yahoo – 9.4 billion per month Bing – 4.1 billion per month

How many of those searches do you imagine are seeking the products or services offered by your business? More and more consumers are putting down the Yellow Pages and looking to Google, Bing and Yahoo for answers to their local business requirements. In fact, 93% of consumers worldwide use search engines to find and access web sites. If your site doesn't show up in the first three pages of search results relating to your business you may as well not have a web site at all. Our SEO services can put your web site higher in the search results, driving more people to your site and generating more hits, leads and sales.

What steps are in the SEO process? We follow a proven process for optimizing web sites for Internet search engines.

Analyze your Business Web Site – We look closely at how your web site is constructed (both what the visitor sees as well as the coding behind the scenes). We will evaluate SEO techniques already in place, if there are any, and outline recommendations as to how your site can be improved in order to effectively leverage SEO. You can rest assured that we know what we're talking about when it comes to your web site's design and functionality. We've been building business web sites since 1998 via our web development division of OnTrack Designs.

Research keywords – Research is conducted into which keywords and key phrases are searched by your potential customers. Keeping these words in mind, we will help you write and/or modify copy for your web site, write headings, even come up with your web site's domain address if you are just beginning your presence on the Internet.

Research your Competition – Knowing what keywords your competition is targeting will help you know what you are competing with. We analyze what words they use, where they use them within the site structure, and in what order.

Analyze Competing Web Sites – By looking at the web sites ranking well for your search phrases, we will have a good idea as to how you can beat them in rankings. Sometimes you might find that the competition is too stiff, in which case you might be best to drop certain phrases and work harder on a less competitive ones. It's important to weigh up a key phrase's potential traffic with its probability of achieving visible rankings in search engines (the top three pages of results).

Rewrite and Restructure – Every aspect of your web site should be optimized (but not over-optimized) and may need to be rewritten to do so. Particular attention is given to meta tags, headings, ALT tags, anchor text, page-specific title tags, keyword file naming, keyword frequency, and more. When properly done, all of this communicates effectively with search engine bots, and their algorithms, to most effectively rank your web site for targeted keywords and key phrases. Yes, much of this is technical and is what we specialize in. Please understand that we will not try to train you in all of the jargon and methods of SEO. We will, however, do our best to simply explain the process and techniques necessary to perform the needed SEO for your web site. If you, or another office, is currently maintaining the web site, those individuals responsible for such maintenance will need to implement any SEO directions that we outline.

Implement a Link Building Plan – Inbound links to your web site are treated by search engines as a vote of confidence by the site supplying the link. The more inbound links to your web site the higher the trust by search engines that your site is genuine. Google's system of PageRank assigns a logorithmic score from 1 to 10 based on your site's inbound links as well as the PageRank of the sites providing the link. More or higher quality links means a higher PageRank which means higher search engine ranking positions.

Submit to Search Engines and Directories – Submitting the web site to the leading search engines and appropriate directories is essential after the web site is optimized. We provide that service and handle all manual submissions.

Implement a Content Management Plan – Once your web site is optimized it is important to maintain fresh, quality content on the site. This can be done in many ways depending on your business. You could host a blog on the site and add to it regularly; you could be continually adding new products to an online store; you could be adding new pages to the web site; you could embed a Facebook (social media) status update; or, you could be adding articles or reviews. Whatever you decide, the important thing is that it happens frequently. Search engines don't like stale content and unless your content is kept fresh, your rankings in the search engines will suffer.

Monitor Changes to your Ranking Positions – It's important that a quality web site analytic tool be in place to monitor web site traffic and search engine activity. This is essential to be able to accurately monitor how each SEO web site change is helping or hindering your overall rankings. If your web site developer did not include a tool for you to be able to monitor your web site statistics, we can provide assistance in this area.

Seven Maintenance Steps – Once SEO has been implemented, it is important to:

(1) do occasional research regarding your industry keywords and phrases;

(2) do occasional research of your competition to see what new strategies they are implementing;

(3) make changes to the wording of your web site, as needed, so that it flows better and is indexed well;

(4) keep building inbound links;

(5) add more pages or content as needed to effectively compete;

(6) continually monitor web site performance using analytics; and,

(7) use our search engine resubmission service to resubmit the web site to leading search engines and directories quarterly (not more frequently) to ensure the highest rankings possible. Search engines constantly change their relevancy algorithms. Therefore, we recommend that you resubmit a web page to a search engine whenever there is a significant change to web page or if a page has dropped from the search engine database.
